- Granada is a city at the intersection of two beautiful cultures. It is a jewel of Arab civilization on the Iberian Peninsula, as well as a modern city of 250,000 at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In the streets, you’ll see both mosques and 16th century cathedrals. At the dinner table with your host family, you’ll practice Spanish and hear their perspective on the city. Everywhere you go, you’ll see the harmonious blend of Islamic and Spanish cultures unique to Southern Spain. Central College Abroad in Granada is a language immersion program, combining coursework and time spent with the local population. By the end of the semester, you won’t be speaking classroom Spanish but the authentic language of the people.
The Central College Abroad program in Granada is a Spanish language immersion program that allows for flexibility in coursework for both Spanish and non-Spanish majors. A typical course load is 14-18 credit hours. The academic program includes: •Program orientation course required of all students •Culture Course required of all students •Phonetics course optional for intensive language students •Program tracks, choose one of four based on interests and language level •Service- learning and internships available for all students (Placements dependent upon language level.)

- The city of Granada is situated at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at the confluence of three rivers, Beiro, Darro and Genil. Granada was first settled by native tribes in the prehistoric period, and was known as Ilbyr. When the Romans colonized southern Spain, they built their own city here and called it Illibris. The Arabs, invading the peninsula in the 8th century, gave it its current name of Granada. It was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492, at the hands of Queen Isabel of Castile and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon. One of the most brilliant jewels of universal architecture is the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th century.
