Program Overview

Program Description:
WorldTeach is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded by a group of Harvard students in 1986 in response to the need for educational assistance in developing countries. It also addressed a growing interest among people in the U.S. and elsewhere to serve, teach and learn as volunteers overseas. Since its inception, WorldTeach has placed thousands of volunteer educators in communities throughout Asia, Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Pacific.

Each WorldTeach volunteer will be paired with a recent graduate from a Tanzanian Teachers' College. The WorldTeach and Tanzanian volunteers will have the same role - to work together with two local teachers from the district to teach 5 hours per day, 5 days a week. Lesson planning and preparation, teaching in the classroom and student assessment will be equally shared between this collaborative teaching team. Teaching styles used in this special and innovative ELT Project will incorporate not only traditional methods- like using the blackboard for introducing new material, and assigning group work to allow the students to practice using it - but will also use computers for interactive and engaging lessons. Classrooms will be equipped with overhead projectors, which will allow students to see the computer screen on a large scale. Further, exciting technology will assist the students to interact with the computer software. The students will be given many opportunities to practice English vocabulary, grammar and structure by using it, on their own, with fellow classmates and through innovative student-centered activities.

Setting Description:
Volunteers will live in school-provided houses. Shared sleeping quarters are a possibility for some of the placements though all volunteers will share common space with their Tanzanian co-teacher. Electricity is scarce with generators being the most common form of power. Solar power is also available to charge cell phones and run laptops.
Cost:
Subsidized by PanAfrican Energy (Tanzania) Ltd, the cost of this program is $3,990. This covers pre-departure information and preparation, round-trip international airfare from a US departure city to Dar Es Salaam, transportation to your district site, overseas medical and emergency evacuation insurance, 2-week long in-country orientation as well as an end-of-service conference, 24-hour field staff support, housing and meals, and alumni support.
