Program Overview

Program Description:

Graffiti & Urban Art - Street Level: A Designer’s Guide to Urban Art

Content

Along with stencil, posters, sculpture, and installation, graffiti is a widely used form of visual communication in the rich and unique context of public space. As wild, anarchic and cutting-edge as graffiti might appear, graffiti writing has its background in clearly defined ways to deal with type. Over decades, these became more and more stylistically diverse. The main invention of graffiti writing is the unique way to distort and invent new letters and apply them to various surfaces and contexts.

INSTRUCTOR

At the age of 12, Felix Gephart got to know graffiti through his older brother Matthias, with whom he has painted most of his walls till today. Focusing on wild-style pieces for 14 years, he moved on to immerse himself in figurative drawing.

Switching from traditional graffiti writing to narratives, he keeps up a big amount of detail, in his large-scaled drawings as well as his murals. Felix illustrated novels such as Low Life, American Psycho, 1984, Nothing New at the Western Front, and Johnny Got his Gun.

He graduated with a Fulbright grant from the master´s program of the New York School of Visual Arts in the field Illustration as Visual Essay.

Felix´ book- and magazine illustrations and fine art pieces for clients like die ZEIT, Cicero, die taz, and der Freitag have been internationally shown and published. His work has been featured by publications such as novum, Page, Amnesty Journal, dpi magazine, Graffiti Art 10 – Styles, Das Graffiti Magazin, art, Empty magazine, American Illustration, Creative Quarterly, Freistil 2014 and Freistil Black, Fresh print, Fresh public, and Illusive 2 and 3.
