Program Overview

Program Description:

Lima is of the largest urban centers in South America and Peru’s capital city. It is also a former urban site of native American Incas. Religion 159GS primarily adopts a historical perspective with a focus on religion of the Incas. There are a number of pre-Columbian sites with deep religious content which fit perfectly for the course. Also, because of close historical relations between Peruvian governments and the Catholic Church, and a complex history of conversation of native Americans to Catholicism dating back to the sixteenth-century, Lima provides ample venues to survey the history of religion and politics in Peru and the broader Latin America. Specific to Religion 160 will be the study of Peruvian constitution, which clearly recognizes the Catholic Church as “an important element of the historical, cultural, and moral development of the nation”.
