Program Overview

Program Description:
Bordering Eritrea to the north, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Sudan and South Sudan to the west, and Kenya to the south, Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in the world. With almost 80 million inhabitants, it also is the second most-populated country in Africa but remains largely rural. Having never been colonialized and with a history that dates back to the origins of mankind, Ethiopia is culturally unique but extremely poor (ranked 173 out of 187 countries on the Human Development Index) and shares the many problems and challenges facing modern Africa.

Dates: July 13, 2015 to July 24, 2015 Graduate Credits: 3 This course will introduce students to program planning in the East African context. Following an overview of research methods in international development, participants in the course will be tasked with collecting field data examining a research problem of their choice. After completing an initial needs assessment, they will outline an intervention program using the logical framework approach and develop a monitoring and evaluation strategy for their project. This course will be taught with support by researchers from local universities and the Tulane field office in Addis Ababa. Field trips include visits to Ethiopian government agencies, UN agencies and international and local NGOs working in the country.
