Program Overview

Program Description:
Students on Tiyul B'Aretz will focus their academic studies through four accredited courses: Jewish Ritual and Belief; Environmental Ethics in the Jewish Tradition; History of Zionism; and Multi-Ethnicity in Modern Israel. All courses will be taught by experienced and passionate teachers and will be enhanced by weekly trips to visit sites and communities or meet with experts in the field in order to bring their learning alive. Students will experience Israel up-close and hands-on as they move their learning beyond the classroom walls.

Tiyul B'Aretz is reinventing college study abroad in Israel. Leaving the campus and the classroom behind, students will travel throughout the length of Israel and use the land, communities and people of Israel as their educational resources and guides. Participants will live in a community setting with other students and earn academic credit as they explore Israel's history, present and future in an up-close and hands-on way. Academic learning will focus on Jewish ritual and belief, the history of Zionism, Jewish environmental ethics and multi-ethnicity of Israel today.

Tiyul B'Aretz understands that education should stimulate students' entire being, not only their minds. The educational experience on Tiyul B'Aretz seeks to stimulate and involve the entirity of a student's faculties, heart, mind, body and soul. We believe this creates a more well-rounded student who is more prepared to find his/her place in this world.
Setting Description:
Students on Tiyul B'Aretz will travel from the south to the north in a semester-long journey around Israel. Residing in a variety of settings such as kibbutzim, moshavim, major cities and small communities, students will spend time in each of Israel's 4 main geographical regions and use the resources and unique opportunities of each to enhance their course-based academic learning. Participants on Tiyul B'Aretz will develop a living relationship with Israel through spending time living in Israeli communities, hiking the land, and meeting with a wide array of people who, together, will piece together a picture of the complex spirit and nature of modern Israel.
Cost:
The cost of Tiyul B'Aretz for a semester of accredited study is $15,500. Students can apply for a $1000 grant from MASA Israel at www.masaisrael.org. Cost includes all housing and food, all transportation in Israel, all academic costs (books, accreditation, etc.) and other day-to-day needs.
