Program Description:
The University of Southern Mississippi’s Summer Teacher Institute in Spain offers graduate students and K-16 Spanish teachers the opportunity to perfect their language and teaching skills while immersed in Andalusia’s vibrant culture and rich heritage. The Institute will be housed at the University of Cádiz in the Facultad the Filosofía y Letras in downton Cádiz, the oldest city in Europe. Students will experience all the city and the province have to offer: music, natural beaches, mountains and countryside, theater, art, bullfights, archeological sites, architectural gems, world-heritage sites; and most of all, the warmth and generosity of Andalusian people.

The Summer Teacher Institute offers a 5 week and a 3 week option. All program participants will have a course specifically designed for teachers and graduate students enrolled in a Master or Doctoral program. This course will cover language teaching methodology, materials development, and Spanish society and culture, and it will allow the participants to develop new lessons and activities to implement in their classes. The 5-week program will also include a language course designed to give the participants the opportunity to continue developing and perfecting their language skills. The 5 week option awards 6 graduate credits and the 3 week option awards 3 graduate credits.
Setting Description:
Nestled between Seville and Malaga, Cadiz is the southernmost province of Spain. If you seek the authentic taste of Andalusian culture and tradition, you need look no further than Cadiz. Besides a wide variety of natural spaces of exceptional ecological beauty, this region contains wetlands and coastal areas that remain untouched. The more than 260 kilometres (approximately 162 miles) of coastline are home to pristine beaches, small bays and several kilometres (miles) of sand dunes. You will also find cosy and intimate beaches with tranquil waters, as well as open beaches swept by strong winds that are perfect for windsurf lovers.
