Program Overview

Program Description:
The annual program provides students from the United States a unique opportunity to intensively study Chinese Language (Mandarin) and immerse themselves in Taiwanese culture over a period of 2 months. TUSA Ambassadors are expected to act as goodwill advocates for both the United States and Taiwan wherever opportunities present themselves. Area of Study: Chinese Language Learning and Taiwanese Cultural Experience Location of Program: National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan Date of Program: July 1st to August 22nd, 2014 (8 weeks) University Recognition: 6 credits Scholarship Provides: Tuition, dormitory accident insurance, four paid excursions, host family weekend, and a one-on-one language partner Expected costs: Airfare, meals, minor utilities, and additional spending money Online Application Period: January 1st to March 31st, 2014 Where to Apply: online at www.taiwanusallince.com Winners Announced: February 25 for early acceptance and April 10 for regular admission

Intensive Chinese Language Classes: • Daily small group classes, 2 hours per day • One-on-one tutorial classes, 1 hour per day. • Teaching will use Hanyu pinyin romanization and traditional characters Cultural Courses and Activities: • Calligraphy, Chinese Painting, Taichi, Tea Ceremon, Stamp Engraving, Taiwanese Language, Chinese Cuisine, and Seminar on relevant topics. Cultural and Language Exchange: • One-on-one language exchange with volunteer students of National Cheng Kung University. Cultural Excursions: • Visiting National Palace Museum, Indigenous and Hakka Culture experience, and other cultural places. Local Weekend Host Families and Volunteer in Local Schools: • Students will be given additional opportunities to further immerse themselves in Taiwanese society.

Setting Description:
Accepted students will be enrolled in the Chinese Language Center at the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan City, Taiwan. The university is recognized as one of the two top institutions of higher education in Taiwan.
Cost:
A scholarship of NT $25,000 (~US $800) per month for two months (July & August) will be awarded to each recipient. The scholarship is budgeted to cover tuition, dormitory fees, all program-related travel and excursions, and accident/outpatient health insurance. Costs to students: Airfare, meals minor utilities, and additional spending money.
