- Program Description:
- Nicaragua is the new eco-destination for alternative study abroad in Central America. Tropical climate, untouched beaches, active volcanoes, and crater lakes make Nicaragua a truly beautiful location. This Program takes you to the campus of Ave Maria University in San Marcos, Carazo and offers opportunities to explore the rest of the country on unique excursions. During week you will be enrolled in a variety of classes of your choice at the University. These could include courses in Business, Chemistry, Literature, Political Science, Spanish Language and more. On free days, spend time with your host family and fellow students, exploring the country and Nicaraguan culture, relaxing on the beach or taking part in exciting excursions, such as volcano boarding, surfing, eco-explorations and historic tours. The Semester or Academic year program will earn you 12 to 16 credits per semester from the American University, Ave Maria University.

If desired, students have the opportunity to volunteer during their time in Nicaragua. These vary from community building, youth education, sustainability, to conservations projects. Please let the NicaEco staff know during your application process if you are interested in volunteering.

- Ave Maria University Ave Marie University in Latin America is a small campus, of approximately 500 students. These students come from all over Nicaragua, Peru, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras and the United States. This campus, located in Carazo, Nicaragua, is a branch of the American university, Ave Marie University based in Florida. Because it is an American institution all classes are taught in English with the exception the Spanish Languages courses meant to improve language proficiency. This also means that credit will easily transfer to your home university and even to your specific major. Another benefit of being an American university is that it has a Federal Financial Aid code, so you can easily use financial aid to pay for the program. At Ave Maria University you will have a wide variety of courses to choose from in such fields as Business, Chemistry, Literature, Political Science, Spanish Language and more.
