The Shanghai program supports interaction and dialogue between Lexia participants and Chinese faculty and students whenever possible. It also encourages participation in Chinese community events, institutions and family life. No prior knowledge of Mandarin is required, as most coursework is in English. Language instruction during the first month of the program is taught intensively to help students develop the language skills and confidence to live and study in, and integrate themselves into, the Chinese community.
- Setting Description:
- With over 13 million people, Shanghai serves as the gateway to the Changjiang (Yangtze) River basin and is poised to become the new global financial center of South Asia, eclipsing Hong Kong and other nearby power centers. With its lively, bustling major thoroughfares and the growing cultural relevance of its art, music, theater, ballet, opera, cinema and universities, Shanghai provides a dynamic and exciting laboratory for Lexia students to study the new China and its move toward reforms. Housing will be arranged by program (residence halls with local students).
