Program Overview
- Program Description:
- The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is a liberal arts program in Aix-en-Provence offering courses in English and French for beginning through advanced French language students and perfect for virtually any liberal arts major.
Designed for all majors, the School of Humanities ad Social Sciences is renowned for its founding philosophy of making it possible for students with beginning French language skills to study in France. The structure of its program, which combines French language study with a range of liberal arts courses taught in both English and French, has opened the doors of cross-cultural learning to thousands of students who would otherwise have been denied the opportunity to study abroad. Proud of this heritage, IAU continues to work with colleges and universities throughout the United States to create opportunities for all students. During the summer term, students enroll in 3, 6 or 9 credits.

- Setting Description:
- A great advantage to living and being a student in France outside of Paris is having direct access to traditional cultures. In smaller towns such as Aix-en-Provence where Americans are not quite so common, it is easier to meet local residents and other university students spontaneously and to speak French. In this setting, IAU’s students gain an invaluable cross-cultural perspective. One of the most beautiful and varied regions of France, Provence’s topography is marvelously diverse with valleys, mountains, canyons, legendary beaches, and the salt marshes of La Camargue where breeding horses is still a thriving industry. Rich in artistic heritage, both Aix-en-Provence is renowned for its Medieval, Renaissance and 17th- and 18th-century architecture. Cave paintings in Cassis, Romanesque abbeys in the Vaucluse, and the influence of Cezanne in Aix, Van Gogh in Arles, Camus in Lourmarin, and Cocteau in the Côte d’Azur are just a few treasures of the region’s cultural heritage.

- Rewarding Summer08/04/13
I thoroughly enjoyed my abroad experience with IAU. Aix is a great city for students - lively yet safe, and the people are very excited to share their culture. I felt supported by the university but not coddled. The are many opportunities to travel and
learn through the university, but you still have the time and freedom to explore independently. Classes provide a wealth of information but are still very flexible. I highly recommend living with a host family. My only caution is to remember that an overwhelming majority of the students in the program (with whom you will spend the majority of your time) are native English speakers. So, if you are looking to be fully immersed in the language, you may want to take this into consideration. However, I felt that my language skills improved, and I learned A LOT culturally because I was able to exchange deeper concepts in my native language.
