Program Description:

The program allows students to get academic credits from studies in French language at the University of Montpellier or at the IMLS and Service-Learning:volunteering in the community coupled with a course on French Institutions.A unique combination of theory through academic study in the classroom and practice through community service.

The program is located in one of the oldest university cities in Europe, on the shores of the Mediterranean. The IMLS organizes students'life in Montpellier: orientation, registration,administrative procedures, language level tests, homestay housing and placement in community service agencies. The level of the student is assessed according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The course on institutions deals with the major issues at stake in French society:the government, Europe,the French education system, health, immigration, women in French society, work, justice, the media etc.. Students are placed in service agencies according to their skills and interests.

Since 1988 in Montpellier, students have been responding enthusistically to this alternative form of education with the IMLS. They are not confined in a strict academic setting but are immersed in a significant component of French society. At the end of their stay, they receive academic credits validated by their home university and a "Volunteer passport" designed to recognize the experience and the skills developed. Students value a holistic experience, a program of immense benefit from a social, cultural, linguistic and personal point of view.

Setting Description:

French language classes are held at the University of Montpellier (one of the oldest in Europe) or at the IMLS and volunteer community service takes place in humanitarian organizations,hospitals and NGOs in various fields:health care, language tutoring or community service. Homestay housing allows a total immersion in French culture and language.
