Program Overview

Program Description:
Is there such a thing as too much beach time? We don’t think so! Come to Thailand and discover why white sand plus clear blue sea is the recipe for true happiness. There is nothing quite like quality beach time to lift your spirits and rejuvenate your weary core. For the first two weeks you will be teaching English to a dedicated class of giggling, eager young students. After class there will be plenty of time for hammocks, swimming and enjoying the fabulous weather. Your next two weeks are a complete jungle and beach adventure. First you will set off tubing down rivers to see wildlife and waterfalls and then spend the night in a real tree house! Add canoeing, a bat cave and boat trip through the jungle to the list and you have yourself one incredible holiday. And don’t forget your week on the stunning beaches of Koh Samui to recuperate from all your crazy Thai adventures. You will finish off the trip with a day in Bangkok where you can get in all your last minute sight-seeing, shopping and gorging to appease the constant cravings brought on by your new found Thai food addiction.

This project is ideal for volunteers who have a genuine love of children and an interest in education. Although you do not require any special skills, any experience working with children would be valuable. You will need to be confident, well-organized, creative and resourceful. To get the most out of this project, you will need to use initiative and prepare for your teaching time.
Setting Description:
What does the project do and why does it need volunteers? We work with a number of state schools and kindergartens in Chumphon, and you will be placed at one dependant on need and availability. The children will vary in age from 3 up to 18 years old, and the schools vary in size. Some schools may have up to 300 students while others are smaller with around 80 students. Thailand has a proud history of never having been colonized by the West and as a result has maintained her own distinct language, culture and tradition. The government did not focus on English language in the past but has recently acknowledged its value in terms of international development. Many schools are keen to employ native English speakers but can not afford to employ paid staff. In many schools children do not actually get the chance to practice day to day conversation and the school we work with are really looking forward to volunteers bringing native English lessons to their classrooms.
