Program Overview

Program Description:
Tanzania is one of the world’s poorest countries in terms of per capita income. The economy depends heavily on agriculture, which accounts for more than one-quarter of Tanzania’s GDP, and employs about 80% of the work force. Many families also depend on their own gardens for nutrition and income. In an effort to increase food security and improve the nutrition and health of Tanzania’s most vulnerable populations, GSC offers trainings on bio-intensive agriculture and food preservation methods, as well as community poultry vaccinations, and help in building rainwater catchment storages “hafirs.” Volunteers assist in conducting sustainable agriculture community workshops and help train community groups on food security and farming techniques, which help Tanzanians lead healthier and more stable lives. The Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security Program is offered throughout the year and can range from two weeks to six months or longer. Undergraduate and graduate students may also receive college credit for their participation in any GSC program.

All participants begin their program with a five-day cultural orientation and training. Swahili lessons are included in the orientation as well as information on the safety, culture, and history of Tanzania, and guest lectures on gender issues, home-based care, and living with HIV. Volunteers will receive technical training in sustainable agriculture and become knowledgeable in bio-intensive agriculture, sack gardens, poultry vaccinations, rainwater catchments, grain storage, and food drying.

A true cultural immersion opportunity where you live, work, and learn with the local people! Participants stay with a Tanzanian family, who will graciously introduce the Tanzanian culture, cuisine and customs through excursions and daily interaction, providing a unique cultural experience not to be forgotten. You will learn new skills through GSC's orientation and technical trainings and provide invaluable service. Become part of a global family!
Setting Description:
GSC volunteers are based in Arusha, Tanzania which is located at the base of Mt. Meru. On a clear day you get a fantastic view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. All participants live with a Tanzanian family in a nearby village, which is perhaps the most amazing cultural experience, providing memories to last a lifetime. While on rural assignments, volunteers may also camp or stay at a local guesthouse providing a unique immersion experience into Tanzanian village life.
