Program Overview

Program Description:

This course will focus on the strategic global policies of oil and natural gas and its political, economic and social impact on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries specifically the Kuwait, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. Course Topics will cover:

  • Overview of the global energy industry- companies and governments; markets and politics; and the position of the GCC within this industry
  • The global energy balance- present status, future trends (alternative energy & implications), and strategic responses from a GCC perspective
  • Resource nationalism and market power (I)- OPEC and the challenges
  • Resource nationalism and market power (II)- The GCC, Iran, Iraq, and the future of hydrocarbon production in the Arabian Gulf
  • The impact of oil boom on the political economies of the GCC- the political economy through its transition from rentierism to developmentalism.
  • The social dimension and impact of the oil boom in the GCC
