Program Overview
- Program Description:
Join us in the 6-day exploration of Iceland, the “Land of Fire and Ice”. Nicknamed for the constant contrasting forces of glaciers and volcanic centers that pull the island apart. Iceland has been the backdrop for many movies such as The Game of Thrones. Led by Dr. Julia Nord (Mason department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences) you will visit Geysir geothermal area, the namesake for all geysers, bathe in the Blue Lagoon, visit stunning waterfalls and have the opportunity to walk on a glacier. You will also see Thingvellir National Park, centered on the surface representation of a mid-ocean ridge and a geological hot spot where North America and Eurasian plates are pulling apart. Thingvellier was also the site of the first Parliament worldwide. These breathtaking geological sites showcase the geothermal energy that courses just beneath the surface of Iceland – you’ll learn how this geothermal energy provides power and heat, how it aides agriculture on the island, and discover how this powerful force is interwoven with the cultural heritage of the Icelandic people.
