Program Overview

Program Description:
Bali is a fascinating part of Indonesia with a true mix of cultures. It stands unique as the region where nearly the entire Hindu minority of the country lives. This mix creates a separate, uniquely Balinese atmosphere found nowhere else in the world. Coupled with gorgeous white-sand beaches, world class surfing, phenomenal food and the welcoming Balinese people themselves, Bali is the ideal place to experience the new and different while volunteering to provide real assistance to local people.

Anyone who has put in the time and effort to master a new language will tell you that the best way to solidify your knowledge is to be immersed, or at the very least, to be around native speakers. While there is obviously not a feasible way to send all the students in a school into an immersive English speaking environment, it is very feasible to expose the children to native English speakers. Native speaking English teachers provide things that very few non-native speakers can: idioms, and accents, and word emphasis, among other things. While children have very flexible minds when it comes to languages, and can pick up a lot of this from English language cartoons and children’s shows, nothing compares to having a fully fluent teacher in the classroom assisting. With the tourism industry so prominent in Bali, children who learn to speak advanced levels of English quickly are put at a great advantage in finding jobs or starting businesses. Volunteer English teachers help provide this added boost both through teaching English classes and through simple day-to-day interactions with Balinese children and families.

Setting Description:
For many people, Bali is far and away the most culturally fascinating island in Indonesia. While it is fully and completely a part of Indonesia, it is often spoken of as an entity separate from the rest of the country. Balinese culture is renowned as being unique in its blend of influences from all over Asia and the Pacific. As the home to nearly all of the minority Hindu population in Indonesia, the food is unique in its substitution of pork into traditional Indonesian dishes. Shadow puppetry and Balinese dance take on a unique flavor as well, making this destination an enchanting spot for any traveler.overview emblem As with any tourist destination, however, there is an unseen undercurrent to Bali. Wealth, it would seem, rarely trickles down from high-end casino and hotel owners to the community which surrounds it. There are, behind the glitz of the resorts and the white sand beaches, people with very real needs. Interns and volunteers with ELI have never shied away from using their
