Program Overview
- Program Description:
When you volunteer in Guatemala, you'll be welcomed by the hospitality of the Guatemalan people who are usually mestizo, a mix of Spanish and Maya ancestry, or they are direct descendants of the Maya.
Following a military coup in 1954, Guatemala plunged into a brutal 36-year-long civil war between government military forces and left-wing guerilla groups. Though the conflict is now long over, Guatemalan communities still struggle against extreme poverty, malnutrition, and discrimination. As a CCS volunteer, you'll connect with the community and help break the vicious cycle of poverty by working side-by-side with local people, addressing real social issues.
For two decades, CCS volunteers have traveled around the world to work on sustainable service projects. Volunteer in Guatemala to help improve education for local children, assist with the care of children, work to empower girls and women through education, support those aging with dignity, or provide simple medical care.
- Setting Description:
- Guatemala City, the capital, is the largest urban center in the country and is quickly becoming an international hub. Business and trade are both flourishing, while the large indigenous population has been relocating to the city in search of opportunities.
