Program Overview

Program Description:

The Master in Advanced European and International Studies (MAEIS) is one-year-programme targeted at students who have completed their undergraduate studies. The programme deals with the role of European Union in a growingly complex world. It focuses not only on academic themes and contexts, but also tries to find concrete solutions to the current political, social and economic issues of a globalised context.
The programme follows an original approach which distinguishes it from other Master's courses in European Studies and International Relations: The MAEIS is subdivided into three terms, and takes place in three different study locations.

The European Integration and Global Studies programme is an itinerant, interdisciplinary and international programme, which following the motto 'Learning and living Europe' allows students from all over the world to gain a deep understanding of the role of the European Union in an ever more complex and turbulent world. Studying in three different locations, students discover how EU institutions, policies and actors shape our world by exploring case studies and discussing with field experts.

The academic year starts In Berlin with our partner Institut für Europeäische Politik (from October to December) where classes encompass the basics of all the four modules (International Relations, European Integration and external action, Economy, Globalisation and suistanable developpment, and Federalism and Governance).

The programme continues in Nice as of January, where courses first deal with reasons for conflict and perspectives for cooperation, analyzing the current international order. Subsequently students will explore UE policies in different fields (trade, democracy promotion, conflict resolution, climate change and development aid) to explain how the EU acts as an actor in the global arena. The programme also tackles the current challenges the EU integration project is facing such as euroscepticism, the economic governance issues, Brexit and refugee crisis.

A one-week study trip will take them to the European institutions and international organisations in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg.

Third term :

Student can choose where to conclude the programme, either in :

  • Rome, where we have a long-term collaboration with the University EuroSapienza and the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), a special focus is given to the Mediterranean region and Africa with particular emphasis on the issues of migration, poverty and food security.
  • or Istanbul with our partner Bilgi University, where courses deal with the relations of the European Union with candidate countries, approaching the EU-Turkey relations and area studies of the Black Sea region, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
