Program Overview

Program Description:
The African Community Internship Placement Programme (ACIPP) was started in 2007 by Simon Tsike-Sossah as a means of financing the Abusua Foundation, a local NGO focused on youth development. ACIPP became its own entity in 2012, and we now support a wide range of NGOs in Ghana and Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Through our internship placements, we aid organisations in the forms of on-the-ground support and in-kind donations. These internships are numerous and varied: with placements in the fields of health education, media, youth development, medicine, agriculture, performing arts, conservation and human rights advocacy. Starting in Ghana, we have expanded beyond its borders, with emphasis on countries in West Africa emerging from war. Come join us in Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Liberia!

AwaaWaa2 is a registered charity set up to provide specialist services to children and young people with communication disabilities and their families. AwaaWaa2 believes in early and comprehensive intervention. AwaaWaa2 runs language groups, outreach services, autism groups, and assessments, reviews and individual therapy sessions. Interns are expected to have, at minimum, a sustained and reflected (via the CV and cover letter) interest in some or all of the following areas: Speech Therapy, Mental Disabilities, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, or Psychology. Interns should be working towards (or have completed) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in a field related to these topics and interests. Applicants pursuing a master’s degree focused on Speech Therapy or Special Education are preferred. Interns should be comfortable speaking in front of groups, creating lesson plans and curriculum, and working with a team of individuals.

Students will receive continual supervision and one week’s orientation from the AwaaWaa2 staff. For the first week of orientation, students will observe group sessions and get to know the AwaaWaa2 staff. Interns will be expected to: -Assist with daily language, early years, or autism group therapy sessions (in the mornings). -Provide additional support to staff during the afternoon hours and organise and lead Saturday activity sessions with children (when available) -Engage with at least one child in the school for intensive one-on-one learning and therapy sessions. You will play the role of friend and counsellor. -Assist in other activities including (but not limited to) community-based outreach, assessments, and reviews of individual children.
