Program Overview

Program Description:

Paris is an incredibly vibrant city to live in and make films; after all, it's the birthplace of the film. A century after the first experiments with motion pictures and almost 50 years since the French New Wave changed the way we look at movies, NYFA Paris students continue the tradition of capturing this city and the stories it generates on film. After running New York Film Academy (NYFA) Paris since 1998, we've found that for many students, Paris becomes a second home.

Currently, New York Film Academy Paris offers courses in Filmmaking and Acting for Film. With NYFA’s 1-week, 3-weeks, 4-weeks, and 6-weeks programs, students work side-by-side with peers from many different countries and cultures and grow personally and professionally.  All NYFA programs are taught in English by internationally recognized, award-winning instructors and professional filmmakers. Every student, no matter what discipline they're in, learns to tell better stories, think creativity, work in a team, and confidently give presentations.

From the very first day of class, the focus of the Filmmaking workshop is to learn through making films. Each student writes, produces, directs, and edits his or her own films, and rotates among crew positions when his or her classmates shoot. In the One-Week workshop, each student will make one film project. In a Three-Week Filmmaking Workshop, each student will produce two film projects of increasing difficulty. In the Four-Week Filmmaking Workshop, each student will produce three film projects of increasing difficulty. Six-Week Filmmaking Workshop students will produce four films of increasing difficulty.

The Acting for Film workshops provide students with a foundation of acting skills with a specific focus on acting for film. Classes emphasize the basic elements of the craft of acting using the techniques of Stanislavski, scene study, and monologue work as starting points. In conjunction with these classes, students also participate in courses aimed specifically at training the actor for the technical requirements of acting on a film set. The participants also get audition experience by auditioning for the filmmaking student film projects. No significant prior experience or knowledge is assumed. NYFA Paris helps all students reach the same level quickly, no matter if a student has no prior acting for film experience.

Setting Description:
All of Paris and the surrounding countryside are considered the backlot studios of the NYFA Paris. While students are immersing themselves in their work, they will also be immersing themselves in Paris' culture. Students are encouraged to use Paris as a backdrop for their films and stories. Whether that means interacting with locals to find the perfect Parisian spot for a film or learning about Paris' history to create their films, students will be out experiencing the city and culture on a daily basis. NYFA Paris holds its study abroad programs at the National Film School of France (La Fémis), one of worlds most elite film institutes. La Fémis is located in the historic Pathé Studios in the 18th arrondissement. The NYFA spring and summer programs at Le Fémis are held in spacious classrooms, meeting spaces, shooting space, and state of the art screening rooms. La Fémis is in the Montmartre district, which has always been the neighborhood of choice for young artists.
