Program Overview

Program Description:
Tour de Math traces the French heritage in American mathematics courses. Based in Grenoble, France students enroll in 1 math course and a 2nd year French course. The history of French contributions to mathematics and mathematical influence in French culture is woven into the program through excursions and course materials. Math courses are taught in English and range from college algebra through differential equations. French is taught by native speakers. Applicants must have completed 1 year of French.

Math Courses: College Algebra; Finite Math, Basic Statistics; Pre-calculus; Business Calculus; Calculus I, II, III; Discrete Math; Set Theory; Linear Algebra; Ordinary Differential Equations; or Special Topics. French Courses: FLF 201-202, Intermediate French (Advanced Courses possible.) Excursions: Depending on student interests, formal faculty guided excursions to museums, research centers, or other sites will be scheduled weekly. Informal gatherings such as a picnic at the Jardin de Ville or bike ride along the Isere river will occur most every day.

The purpose of this program is three-fold: 1) to provide a better understanding of American university mathematics courses through connections to their French origins, 2) to immerse in French culture and language instruction, and 3) to broaden perspectives with international experience. Students earn 3 hours credit of French and 3 to 4 hours of math.
Setting Description:
Two institutes of mathematics and an abundance of high-tech research consortiums make Grenoble an established, scholarly setting for American students to learn mathematics and French, yet it affords students ample opportunities to immerse in all aspects of French culture without too many distractions from their studies. It attracts college students from all over the world to study French, mathematics, science, engineering,business, and liberal arts. Nestled in a flat valley and surrounded by mountains, Grenoble is easy to get around by foot, bike, or tramway and provides easy access to mountain resorts and other enchanting places in France. By high-speed rail, Paris is only 3 hours away.
