Program Overview

Program Description:
A land at the edge of the world and at the frontiers of empire when Rome was at the centre; a land where brilliant art flourished in religious houses in a dark age; a land contested by two peoples, English and Scot; a land with coal in the ground, steel in the mills and ships in the ports; the land where the railroads were born and where the industrial world came to life. These are the legacies of this region of the United Kingdom and from here people crossed the Atlantic to build a new world.
