Program Description:

The Cornell in Turin Summer Study Abroad is designed for students who want to learn about European politics and society, with a special focus on Italy, and to immerse themselves in a city rich with history and culture. The famous architect Le Corbusier described Turin, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean in the magnificent Piedmont region of Northern Italy, as "the city with the most beautiful natural location in the world." Once the seat of the Italian monarchy, Turin was the first capital of modern Italy and has served as the focal point of many important social and political movements. Today, Turin, with a metropolitan population of almost two million, is also one of the most important and dynamic cities in Southern Europe. The city center features grand boulevards full of specialty shops, atmospheric cafes and world class restaurants, as well as palaces and cathedrals that showcase some of the best examples of baroque architecture in all of Europe. The University of Turin, founded in 1404, is one of the oldest universities in Europe and among the most significant research universities in Italy. The six-week program features two, consecutive three-credit courses: GOVT/SOC 3323 European Politics and PAM/DSOC 3620 Population Controversies in Europe & the US. The courses are taught by Cornell and University of Turin faculty and hosted at the Einaudi Foundation in the majestic Palazzo d'Azeglio in downtown Turin. The program also features an excursion to the town of Dogliani, about an hour south of Turin. Participants may enroll in either one of the two three-week courses or in both courses. Some limited scholarships may be available. Lecture and discussion sessions for this program are conducted in English, so no knowledge of Italian is required. The program is open to all university and college undergraduate students; participants need not be Cornell students. Enrollment is limited to a maximum of 16 students per class in order to ensure the highest quality of instruction. The Cornell in Turin Summer Program is organized by the Cornell Institute for European Studies, with the generous support of the San Giacomo Foundation, Luigi Einaudi Foundation, Associazione Polis, and the Comune di Dogliani. The program is administered by the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions at Cornell University.
