The IES Beijing Summer Program offers intensive beginner, intermediate, and advanced intermediate level Chinese language study. Though Mandarin Chinese, the national language, is spoken in some form by the majority of the population, the form of Mandarin spoken in Chengde and Beijing is considered the standard. Therefore, these are ideal locations for learning correct pronunciation. Students can practice on the streets and in the shops as well as in the classroom.

Beijing Intensive Chinese Language Program

CET's Beijing Chinese Language Program's curriculum is both intensive and integrated. A core course gives equal emphasis to the four main language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening while focusing on a different topic of study each week. Advanced students also choose elective classes such as newspaper, business or literature to add further scope to their language learning. Students take a total of 20 class hours per week of core, supplementary and elective courses, depending on their level. All students have a one-hour individual tutorial each week to review new material and practice free response conversation. In addition, each week students take two hours of one-on-two instruction that targets pronunciation, intonation and fluency.

Beijing Chinese Studies Program

CET's Beijing Chinese Studies Program is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of Chinese culture, history and issues of contemporary significance, while allowing them the flexibility to focus on specific topics of their choosing. The program accommodates all students, with varying degrees of Chinese background, by offering a mandatory course ("21st Century Beijing") that centers on issues of critical importance in today's Beijing, as well as electives in Chinese history, politics, economics, philosophy and literature. In addition to these area studies courses, three levels of Chinese language are offered: beginning through high intermediate. However, CET is able to accommodate advanced students, including heritage learners. All Chinese language courses are taught in Chinese, and area courses are taught in English.
