Program Overview

Program Description:
The Master of Arts in Interior Design is for those who wish to achieve expertise in this broad-based and management-oriented profession, studying design, code compliance and sustainability practices. The program prepares students who are equally well-versed in history and theory of design and in design studio skills. The faculty is comprised of working architects and designers, and small class sizes allow for a personalized studio environment. Through a combination of elective and specialized courses such as Selected Topics in Design and Speculative Studies, students concentrate in focused areas of their choosing. Previous areas of interest have included green design, historic preservation, space planning, project management, digital rendering, hotel and restaurant design, and exhibition design. Known for fascinating academic study abroad programs, the Corcoran has an international focus. Students are encouraged to study abroad and take advantage of many international opportunities, earning course credit in France, Germany, Denmark, Scotland, Mexico, Greece, and India. Equipped with a strong background in design and firm grasp of art history, graduates of the program are well qualified for many possible career paths in the design field. Alumni are currently working at architectural, interior design and textile design firms, as well as residential design, project management, exhibition design firms and cultural institutions.
