Program Overview

Program Description:
York offers a Master of Arts program (MA) and a Master of Fine Arts program (MFA). The focus of the MA program is to foster the understanding of dance in its cultural, intellectual and social contexts, whereas the MFA program is a studio-intensive program centred on research in contemporary choreography and dance dramaturgy within diverse theatrical dance events. MA Established in 1976, the MA in Dance is a five-term program. Students have access to courses in other disciplines such as Music, Anthropology, Visual Arts, English and History. In addition, there is a combined three-year program that leads to both the MA and MBA degree. Our combined emphasis on theoretical and practical approaches to dance is a strength of our program and graduates may be found working in a variety of fields including community, production, therapy, teaching, administrative and archival positions. MFA York's Dance MFA is unique — the only program in the world to offer research opportunities in both choreography and dance dramaturgy within the context of diverse contemporary dance practices. The MFA is aligned with the Dance Department’s pioneering BFA program (the oldest and largest of its kind in Canada) and builds on the 30-year history of York’s internationally recognized MA in Dance.
