Program Description:

The Master of Planning (MPlan) is a professionally accredited degree designed to offer core knowledge, training and key skills required by qualified planners. It also provides students with the opportunity to concentrate their studies in one of four particular fields: Environmental Sustainability, Urban Management and Governance, Urban Design, or Urban Modeling.

Building on the expertise in the UNSW Planning and Urban Development Program together with postgraduate offerings from other disciplines in the Faculty, the Master of Planning allows professionals with an undergraduate degree to obtain postgraduate planning qualifications as a means to address the demand for planners.

The MPlan degree is designed to offer core knowledge, training and key skills required by qualified planners.  As well as equipping graduates for a career in planning, the MPlan degree is also tailored for professionals working in other sectors, especially those whose work may intersect with the planning system, or requires involvement with planning agencies.

Graduates have a sound understanding of the principles and practices of planning and an ability to think critically and analytically about the development and preservation of the built environment.

Career Options
Planners are employed in a large variety of positions in many different organizations with some stake in the built environment. The major employment sectors are state and federal government departments (dealing with land use, development, transport, heritage, infrastructure, urban services etc.), local councils, consultant planners, property companies, and environmental organizations.

Accreditation:

The MPlan degree is accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). Master graduates are eligible, subject to professional experience requirements, for corporate membership of PIA.

A Bachelor degree or equivalent. Where an applicants qualifications are not considered adequate, admission may be permitted to the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma, with the possibility of upgrading to the Masters program, subject to satisfactory performance.
