Program Overview

Program Description:
Instruction in theory, methods and analysis in compulsory courses The Masters program "Democracy and Governance in Europe" provides the optimal preparation for Europe. In the comprehensively designed compulsory courses you will acquire a broad practical, theoretical and methodological basic knowledge of topics relevant to Europe. You will discuss problems in the political and social sciences in the areas of comparative policy analysis and research concerning the European unification process as well as the structure of individual EU-member countries. At the same time, we refine your methodological skills and expand your knowledge of both established and innovative theories involving the analysis of the European multi-level system and of European countries. Additionally, you will explore the relationship of the EU to its neighboring regions as well as the incorporation of the EU into the international system. Due to the growing supranationalization of politics in EU-countries, the European Union is becoming more and more important as an autonomous political level above that of regional and national levels. Numerous links exist between political processes of governance, from the municipal and the regional levels to national and European levels and finally to the international level. In this Master's program, you will learn to master this new complexity of multi-level politics and to confidently find your way through comparative system analyses, policy analysis, political theory, international relations and other sub-disciplines of political sciences with the help of traditional and innovation analytical concepts. Integration of the horizontal and vertical perspectives In Tubingen we offer you an extensive political science introduction to research on Europe. The central themes here are democracy and governance in Europe. You will grapple with the central normative questions of governance as well as the relationship between democracy and economy. Here we present an outline of the horizontal perspective, that is, the comparison of EU-member countries with each other, and the vertical perspective, or the interplay between the EU-level and the national level in the context of the European integration process. By consciously distinguishing the Masters from degree programs designed in a more interdisciplinary fashion we enable you to get a more in-depth look at the analytical concept of the multi-level system and at the use of comparative methods. This, in turn, interlocks the horizontal perspective and the vertical analysis of the interacting levels and unifies them into one integrated point of view. Program tailored to each individual in elective courses Our electives offer you the possibility to optimally prepare for your future job. Depending on your interests and career goals, you can specialize in particular theoretical or practical aspects of the discipline. You can choose to more extensively explore the key research areas of our Institute or to expand your perspective on Europe through courses in related subject areas (economics, sociology, law/jurisprudence, history, geography). Additionally, in the electives-phase of the program internship possibilities offer you the opportunity to prepare for your future career. Comprehensive instruction in methods and theory The demand for analyses of the European integration process founded in the social sciences as well as for well-educated and highly qualified personnel to aid in shaping European policy in national and non-national contexts is steadily growing. The Master's degree "Democracy and Governance in Europe" is designed to teach you methods of analysis primarily in the field of comparative political science. With these tools you will be able to understand the political processes of a multi-level system and critically evaluate these processes from a democratic theory perspective. With respect to both content and methods you will be optimally prepared for a future career path in a European context. Through the prioritization of current and innovative theories of political science, the Masters provides excellent prospects for an academic career in the context of a doctoral program at a university or in European research institutes. Additionally, the focus of the content on current developments in member countries and in the European Union opens doors to career paths in government administration and social organizations, political advising and mediation as well as in economics at the national, European and international levels. Job-related specializations and possibilities to complete an internship or to spend time abroad further enhance these qualifications.
