- The MD/PhD Program at the University of Toronto, offered jointly by the School of Graduate Studies and the Faculty of Medicine, provides highly qualified students the opportunity to combine fundamental biomedical research with clinical training. Students in this combined program may register in one of the basic science departments, research oriented clinical departments or institutes, or any other graduate department. Most students pursue the dual degrees in a sequential model, completing the basic science component of medical school, followed by full time graduate study until completion of the PhD degree, and then returning to complete medical school. The MD and PhD degrees are obtained in an average of 8 years.
