Program Overview

Program Description:

The MRT is a 12-credit, four course program that can be taken as part of the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction degree plan or separately.

New legislation passed in 1999 (House Bill 2307) required the creation of the Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Certificate as part of the Texas Reading Initiative. The purpose of the certificate is to ensure that all Texas students are reading on grade level by the end of the third grade and that their reading knowledge and skills grow throughout their public school careers.

Students must have a Texas teaching certificate, at least three years of teaching experience, complete the Master Reading Teacher preparation program, and pass the Master Reading Teacher certification exam.

*Practicum does not denote a full time experience. If you are not currently teaching, you can find a participating school for field work, and we will provide documentation to the school/district that verifies your enrollment in our program and the requirements for field experience.

Teachers who successfully complete the MRT program and teach on a "high needs" campus designated by the Commissioner of Education may be eligible for a $5,000 stipend. For more information, and for an alphabetical list by district name of "high needs" campuses, visit the Texas Education Agency website.
