Program Overview

Program Description:

The MA Chinese Studies offers a flexible range of units in the social sciences combined with rigorous language tuition at beginners´, intermediate and advanced levels.

Students may choose from units on contemporary society and politics. These will address such questions as:

  • How far should we see human rights as nationally or culturally specific, and how does this affect our understanding of ‘rights’ in China?
  • How does China’s contemporary consumer culture serve as a site for the negotiation of social identity? How far does this echo the practices of the early modern era?
  • Can we, and should we, challenge the centrality of ‘revolution’ to twentieth century Chinese history?

Students taking intermediate and advanced Chinese may also choose from modules on politics and economy in the East Asian context, or take the independent study unit `Issues in East Asian Studies´ to produce an extended essay on a question selected from one of their other module choices.

The language programme develops both practical competence and strategies for further independent study. Beginners will leave with an understanding of all core grammatical structures, a vocabulary of around 1500 Chinese characters, the ability to apply this knowledge in speaking, reading and writing, and the basic skills needed to read a newspaper. Students of intermediate and advanced Chinese will develop a broad range of skills through discussion, analysis and translation of current materials from the Chinese press, journals, government publications and fiction, and will produce a portfolio of independent work.

Diploma (9 months) and Certificate (4 months) options are also available for this programme – please contact us for further details.
