Program Overview

Program Description:

Take a journalism degree at Sheffield and you’ll see the profession’s bigger picture. With our MA in Broadcast Journalism you'll be immersed in radio and television news, and thinking like a broadcast journalist right from the start. And you'll discover how broadcast techniques work online.

You'll learn how to ask the questions that matter, how to find your own stories and turn them into sharp and imaginative content for TV, radio and online. You'll learn how to record and film material and use our advanced editing suite to shape it into your own bulletins. You’ll learn from expert journalists with years of experience in broadcast media, as well as vital background knowledge in media law and public administration, ethics and regulation.

All these skills are indispensable in today’s digital media landscape. That’s why our students learn journalism by doing journalism – during a series of newsdays, where you’ll work with other students to produce radio and TV bulletins under conditions that simulate a professional newsroom. You'll suggest your own stories, follow up others and always be working against the clock. Many of these newsdays are led by working journalists from around the region.

Our links with the industry open up opportunities. You’ll go on work experience and take a three-day trip to London, visiting national news organisations and attending briefings with politicians, editors and other leading journalists. And the degree is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council – a mark of quality recognised across the industry

All of this means our graduates fare exceptionally well in the jobs market, working for the BBC, Sky, Channel 4, commercial radio and internationally. Some year groups boast almost a 100 per cent employment record.

Ultimately our unique blend of professional expertise and academic excellence means you’ll get practical experience across a range of media and a firm grasp of rigorous, ethical reporting. That’s why editors know a Sheffield graduate can make a world-class journalist.
