Program Description:
The Master of Science in Nursing with a clinical specialty of Mental Health Nurse Practitioner uniquely combines Internet course work, campus seminars and community preceptors within the student's geographic area. The program provides advanced practice nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct mental health promotion groups, to diagnose and treat individuals and families experiencing psychological problems and crises, to treat and case-manage individuals with persistent mental illness, and to prescribe psychotropic medications.

The degree program requires 42 to 45 online semester credit hours and includes more than 500 hours in a supervised clinical practicum. Practicum experiences can be arranged in the student's geographic area.

A post-master's program for advanced practice nurses who want to specialize in mental health also is offered. This program is developed on an individual basis.
