Program Description:
The Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Resources Management/Master of Science in Integrated Science and Technology programme is an innovative dual degree programme established jointly by the University of Malta and James Madison University (Virginia, USA). The sustainable management of environmental resources today presents a major challenge for human societies worldwide. There is growing recognition that sustainability cannot be achieved in a piecemeal fashion but requires the balanced integration of different perspectives. The objectives of the Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Resources Management programme are thus to enable students to gain and apply technical knowledge to address complex natural and/or anthropogenic problems that impact the environmental condition through a holistic systems approach.

Specific taught study-units include the following: Data Measurement Geographic Information Systems Comparative case studies in Air and Waste Comparative case studies in Water Policy fundamentals Comparative policy Data mining Modelling and simulation Systems thinking Comparative case studies in Agriculture-Food-Land Comparative case studies in Energy Comparative case studies in Marine-Coastal Mediterranean Science and Technology Policy Following completion of the taught study units, students will have the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills acquired to a relevant subject of their choice, through the completion of a research dissertation. Guidance on research methods will also be given throughout the course.

The total amount of ECTS is 95 and upon completion students will receive a postgraduate degree from University of Malta and another from James Madison University.
Setting Description:
The course of studies leading to award of the MSc Sustainable Environmental Resources Management/MS Integrated Science and Technology extends over 3 semesters, with short periods of recess in between. The course is delivered on a full-time basis. The entire programme of studies will be completed in 13 months. The first two course semesters will comprise taught study-units, whilst the third semester is dedicated to student research in connection with the writing of a dissertation. Subject to approval by the Board of Studies, students may opt to conduct their research during this third semester outside Malta. All lectures will be held at the Valletta Campus The course curriculum focuses on subject areas which are particularly critical for developing sustainable environments for humankind. Each of the areas of focus requires knowledge of fundamental science and technology aspects, as well as policy and legal considerations that vary among countries and regions.
