Program Overview

Program Description:
This single-honours programme, leading to a University of London BA, is taught mostly in French. Students benefit from small classes to ensure that their spoken and written French is of the highest standard. It lasts three university sessions (rather than the usual four, which include a Year Abroad), so that the financial investment is considerably reduced. Successful students graduate with considerable fluency in French, as well as an in-depth knowledge of French ways of thinking, negotiating and planning. This enhances their potential for employment by both British and French organisations engaged in cross-Channel activities.

This is a unique programme of study delivered over three full years of residency in Paris. Not only does it offer students real immersion in French life and language, supported by intensive teaching and assessment across all aspects of the course in French, it also prepares them for graduate work in a range of disciplines: the humanities, international relations, education, applied linguistics and urban sociology. The programme contains a combination of compulsory core courses to consolidate spoken and written skills in French language and to introduce students to historical periods, to diverse forms of cultural production, and to contemporary critical and theoretical approaches, with a range of stage two and three specialist options that enable students to develop their own interests.

Setting Description:
Our students have the opportunity to experience a high degree of linguistic immersion, both inside and outside of the classroom. They benefit from living and studying in one of the greatest capital cities in the world, and the top student city for 2014, 2015 and 2016. The University of London Institute in Paris is centrally located on the Left Bank’s Esplanade des Invalides in the city’s 7th arrondissement, home to the French National Assembly and numerous government ministries, the Eiffel Tower, Hôtel des Invalides (Napoléon's resting place), and a concentration of such world-famous museums as the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée Rodin.
