- Not as great as it appears07/09/15
So i attended ISU Kassel this summer of 2015. Before the program I was very excited to start but I quickly realized after it had started that, I wasn't in as great a program as I had thought I was in. To be blunt about it, the entire structure of the
program and the material was a joke. Nothing about the courses were "intense" or challenging in anyway. I feel like I paid a lot of money, not for what could have been a very valuable educational experience, but for a vacation with a German host family. The German language course was quite a mess. Our instructor was a fellow student at the University who was working on their bachelors in German education. But we spent most our class time discussing things such as going out to the bars, and discussing things like clothing. At the end of the class I usually felt hopeless about learning any practical German language skills. When we did practice and learn new material relating to the German language, it was simple and always explained in English. The whole experience of that class leads me away from learning German. This was not my first German language course mind you, I have had a total of 2 and 1/2 years of German language classes. I was very disappointing in it. The other 2 classes were very disappointing as well. Mostly the courses were just unorganized and plainly not interesting. The instructors did not even seem to make an effort and follow the course description. Besides from the courses not living up to my expectations, the excursions and trips on the weekends were great experiences that I will remember for a long time. Also Kassel wasn't a terrible city, it isn't Frankfurt or Berlin, but it is a nice town with interesting enough history that most people would appreciate. Besides from the classes being unorganized, the entire program was a mess. Most of the time they changed times on us from the original posting and made frequent mistakes in emails about dates/days of events. But overall it was a good experience and everyone who was a part of the ISU team was very nice and I'm glad I got a chance to meet them. But I can't help but think my time and money could have been used more wisely than on what turned out to be a vacation. Sincerely, One very foiled ISU student.
