Program Description:

This Construction Engineering Masters (CEM) programme is a new Master of Studies (MSt) course offered by the Department of Engineering in association with the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge. This course aims to precipitate a revolution in the construction sector by educating leaders to break down traditional barriers and transform the future of the industry. This is a two-year part-time degree targeted at those who have had several years professional experience and already attained a leadership role or been identified as potential leaders in their field. The course will enhance their technical knowledge and managerial skills with the expectation that they will return to their respective companies trained as merchants of change who will redefine the way in which the infrastructure of society is created. Overall aims The course aims to be unique rather than just an excellent version of what is already available elsewhere in construction management courses. It will explore the future of construction, seeking new paradigms and innovative models for delivery, drawing on the latest research in management, construction technologies and processes. The aim is to deliver a course that will encompass the full spectrum of the construction industry covering topics from the high level financing requirements of PFI and PPP type mega-projects through to the latest innovations in analysis, design and materials technology. Existing widely held assumptions will be challenged with the aim of revolutionizing construction and the public perception of it. The programme is multidisciplinary aiming to embrace key concepts taken from the full gamut of the industry which covers a broad range of sectors (e.g. private and commercial buildings, transport, energy, maritime and off-shore, water and waste, digital communications). The list is endless - each area produces its own unique challenges yet core methods and practices apply to all. Course themes The course focus is centred on the following themes: • Finance, planning and procurement • Design for construction • Advanced construction management and methods • Advanced construction technology • Functionality, operation and performance • Sector specialisation • Innovation, research and the future of construction Sustainability, leadership, innovation, whole life performance and whole systems thinking will be interwoven throughout the course. Themes are not necessarily delivered in the order shown above. Courses are continually evolving in order to stay current with emerging trends and thus the detailed syllabus may vary from that in the published literature. Course structure The CEM programme is a two-year part-time course. Students spend a total of seven residential weeks in Cambridge during the two years; four weeks in the first year and three in the second. The dates for the 2011-2013 cohort are show below. Residential weeks for 2011-2013 cohort: • September 18th – 24th, 2011 • December 11th – 17th, 2011 • March 25th – 31th, 2012 • June 24th – 30th, 2012 • December 9th – 15th, 2012 • April 7th – 13th, 2013 • July 14th – 20th, 2013 During each residential week, the programme typically includes: • Lectures and seminars • Workshops • Group projects • Presentations • Individual meetings with your supervisors The course will be delivered primarily by academic staff from the Department of Engineering, Judge Business School and other University departments. Industry experts will also be providing lectures and seminars on the latest technologies and cutting-edge ideas.
