Program Description:
The first year consists of the following subjects: physical and chemical oceanography; marine ecology and biodiversity; marine pollution and ecotoxicology; marine microbiology; marine ecophysiology; molecular ecology of the marine environment; marine tropical habitat management; applied mathematics and statistics; climatology and climate change; introduction to GIS; information retrieval, management and presentation; practical exercises, field training and seminars on development co-operation. The second year incorporates the following core courses: integrated coastal zone management; marine data and information management; law of the sea; bio-statistics; geographical information systems; scientific reporting and didactics; recent internet development for information management and field work. In addition, students must choose one of the two optional blocks: (1) marine biodiversity and conservation (including ecosystem modelling; population ecology and dynamics; exploitation and management of coastal resources); (2) marine pollution and risk assessment (bio-markers ? environmental bio-monitoring techniques; environmental risk assessment; chemical and biological monitoring). During the second year, students carry out their M Sc thesis research - on a topic directly related to an ecological problem in their home countries - in one of the participating laboratories.The 2-year programme is open to holders of a certificate of Bachelor of Science of 4 years; Bachelor of Science of 3 years with professional experience; Bachelor in Engineering; Bachelor in Veterinary studies; Bio-engineer; Licentiate in science or industrial engineer; or equivalent. A certificate of fluency in English (preferably a TOEFL score of at least 550). Upon successful completion of the required examinations the programme leads to the degree of Master of Science in Ecological Marine Management.
