Program Overview

Program Description:
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is known for its pioneering new media scene, with its emphasis on Internet culture. Courses in the New Media MA are conducted in English by an internationally renowned faculty and our global student-body comes from a wide variety of backgrounds. Students gain an in-depth knowledge of new media theory viewed from the perspectives of media-archaeological, materialist and other critical traditions, and applied to such topics as blogging, locative media, networks and protocol. They also receive training in the areas of information-aesthetics and visualisation, in which the emphasis is on how to read, understand and critique information graphics, interfaces and online interactivity. New Media is a track of the master's programme in Media en cultuur (Media and Culture). This master's programme has been legally accredited by the Dutch government in 2002. This means that upon successful completion of the programme students will receive a legally accredited master's degree in Media en cultuur and the title Master of Arts (MA). The quality-of-living in Amsterdam ranks among the highest of international capitals. UvA’s competitive tuition and the ubiquity of spoken English both on and off-campus make the program especially accommodating for foreign students.
