- Students interested in teaching at the secondary level can select from a wide range of options, including the Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics). Certification titles include: Initial Certification (Certificate of Advanced Study; Grades 7-12): This program will prepare students for New York State Initial Certification. Professional (Master's Degree; Grades 7-12 or Grades 5-12): This degree in combination with other New York State requirements will help teachers obtain professional certification. Students who have initial certification at the adolescence level can elect for an Ed.M. that qualifies them for professional certification at the middle school child and adolescence levels. In addition, students in programs in early childhood or childhood education may choose to concentrate studies in science. The unique sequence of research experiences and courses in the programs includes science curriculum, science instruction, measurement and evaluation of science instruction, and a research seminar. Coursework includes areas such as science, technology, and human values supplements the core program.
