Program Overview

Program Description:
The graduate program in physical education at SUNY Cortland educates specialists in Adapted Physical Education, Coaching Pedagogy or Physical Education Leadership who will be both leaders and advocates of positive change in their fields. Adapted Physical Education: Includes study in adapted physical education, instructional strategies and curriculum and measurement in adapted physical education, as well as course work in inclusive outdoor education, positive behavior management and discipline in physical education and preschool movement programs. Coaching Pedagogy: Provides knowledge and skills for coaching and teaching physical education through emphasis on teaching, research methodologies and applications of current technology. This hybrid program combines on-line and on-campus course work over three consecutive summers. Topics include lifespan motor development, digital video analysis, issues in athletic training, sports conditioning, principles of coaching, behavior in sport and inclusive coaching methods and programs. Physical Education Leadership: An intensive one-year program of study that prepares you to take a leadership role in developing and implementing progressive physical education curricula and advocating for quality physical education programs. Study includes research on teaching effectiveness, curriculum models, fitness programming, and leadership techniques. School-based field experiences will include working with diverse populations and applying various technologies to enhance student learning.

International Requirements:
(1) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam report with a minimum score of 550 (paper version) or 213 (computerized version), and 79 Internet equivalent on the U.S. scale. If your scores are at or slightly above these minimum requirements, you may be asked to provide additional evidence of English proficiency. If you are interested in pursuing a dual degree program, you will be expected to meet the English proficiency standards of both institutions. (2) Applications will be reviewed for admission based on academic accomplishments and the level of proficiency in the English language. Immigration form I–20, which is used to secure an F-1 visa, will be issued once all required information has been received and you have been accepted to SUNY Cortland.
