Program Description:
The Applied Psychology doctoral program is designed for students interested in research careers dealing with applied problems in non-academic and academic settings. It is based on the premise that empirical research methods and psychological theory can be of great assistance in solving problems of society, organizations, and technology. The program provides students with training in research and data analysis methods that can be applied to a variety of problems in public and private sector. The core of the Applied Psychology major consists of a series of courses on program evaluation, measurement, data analysis, research design, psychology theory and content courses, as well as concurrent applied research consulting experience and independent research. In addition, in order to deal intelligently with applied problems, students develop an area of specialization, acquiring in depth knowledge of the psychological theory and research. With the approval of the faculty, students may define their own specialty areas. Throughout the program there is an emphasis on integrating research techniques with psychological theory and data. Areas of specialization include: Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Applied Social Psychology, Applied Health Psychology, Applied Behavioral Analysis, Program Evaluation, and Research Methods and Statistics. The centerpiece of the Applied Psychology doctoral program is Applied Research Consultants (ARC), which is a consulting firm run by graduate students in the Applied program, supervised by a faculty member. ARC consults with many businesses and agencies and other units with in the university on applied research, such as survey research, performance evaluation, program evaluation and statistics. Funds generated by consulting activities enhance the applied graduate program by offering students travel money for conferences, computer equipment and more. All graduate students receiving 9-month stipend and tuition remission.
