Program Description:

This is an exciting new course and unique in being the only Masters programme in the UK devoted to thestudy of construction history. Most courses dealing with the history of building focus on the stylistic treatment of buildings and the evolution of design, and ignore the productive forces that allowed earlier societies to build on a large scale. Interesting questions about the building labour process (labour and management), technological change in the building industry, the relationship between construction capacity and demand, sources of wealth to finance building, the development of building materials, the organisation of construction projects, developments in structural form, the industrialisation of the building process etc. are rarely mentioned and not given their proper importance.
