Program Overview

Program Description:
Since 1969, Sotheby’s Institute of Art has been educating generations of art world professionals and preparing students for careers in the international art world. With campuses in the cultural capitals of London, New York and Los Angeles, Sotheby’s Institute offers graduate-level programs and a range of academic courses that uniquely integrate art historical scholarship and market expertise. Through many paths of study, our students gain the knowledge and credentials needed for success in today’s worldwide art markets and cultural institutions.

Master's programs emphasize hands-on learning experiences outside the classroom, bringing students into direct contact with works of art through study trips to galleries, museums, auction houses, and private collections in London and across Europe. In London, four Master's Degree programs are offered in Art Business, Contemporary Art, Fine and Decorative Art and Design, and Modern and Contemporary Asian Art.

All of the Institute’s programs are designed to prepare students for a career in the international art world. The Institute also works with students to help the find art-related internships at auction houses or in galleries, museums and other art institutions. Study programs and internships provide invaluable experience and lead to professional contacts. Alumni provide an extensive network of curators, museum executives, dealers, gallery owners, and practitioners holding art-related positions in insurance, consulting, publishing, arts marketing and arts administration. Graduates of the Institute are invited to become members of this distinguished alumni community, which offers extraordinary access to professionals already active in the art world. The Institute’s career services staff also offers counsel and guidance in defining aspirations and in the pursuit of employment goals.
Setting Description:
Found in the heart of Bloomsbury, the London campus is at the center of one of the world’s most important art capitals. The Institute is situated in Bedford Square, built between 1775 and 1783, one of the best preserved Georgian squares in London with a private central garden. We are only a few minutes’ walk from the British Museum, Sotheby’s auction house, the National Gallery, the University of London and the Royal Academy. The Institute is also close to Mayfair, the traditional center of the London art market, where many dealers and galleries are located.
