Program Overview

Program Description:
Programs are designed to give students a cancer research experience along with a broad based education in the biomedical sciences. Students are given the opportunity to design their own curriculum in consultation with the Chair of the program. Thus, while students are matriculated into the Interdisciplinary Master of Science program; some may concentrate in molecular biology, immunology, pharmacology, biophysics, biochemistry or some other established field. One of the major strengths of this program is the exposure provided to students to the multi- and inter-disciplinary nature of cancer research. The program faculty is supplemented by 100 faculty members from the Institutes other Divisional departments. In the 55 years since its formation, more than 1200 graduate students have earned MS degrees from the Roswell Park Division of the University at Buffalo. The program is open to USA and Canadian citizens or permanent residents only, Of these alumni, more than 50% have gone on to earn medical degrees, with the other graduates having excellent career options such as entering PhD programs, entering the scientific work force, becoming a science teacher, or earning an MBA or law degree before starting a career. Two key words which describe the MS program at Roswell are Flexibility and Alternatives. Of the 36 credit hours required to graduate, only 8 hours are in required courses. Each MS candidate forms his or her own course of study, including which cancer research project to pursue. This flexibility gives our alumni a great advantage over "prescribed" courses of study, which may or may not interest the student. Our administration philosophy is that the MS degree program is yours', not ours, and your hopes and goals are most often best achieved through your personal choices. This doesn't mean that you will go without good counsel, as we meet with all our students on a semester by semester basis and more frequently if needed or requested.
