Program Overview

Program Description:
Students will be eligible for the award of a post graduate certificate on completion of 60 credits at masters level, using a combination of three genetic healthcare modules: • Genetic Science for Health Professionals • Counselling Skills for Genetic Healthcare • Practical Genetics for Health Professionals. This award is appropriate for graduate nurses and midwives who wish to become genetic counsellors and other health practitioners who are required to have genetic healthcare skills and knowledge to practice. This might include specialist midwives, nurses working in haemophilia care, haemoglobinopathies, and cardiac genetics. Students can undertake two modules of 30 credits or three modules at 20 credits to obtain the award. The modules are part of the Inter-professional Masters Scheme and the student can progress to a Master's degree in Applied Health Studies using credits obtained. The course is provided on a part-time basis using a combination of study blocks (where students attend in person over 3-4 days) and distance learning via webcasting. We have planned the course this way to enable students from a wide geographical area to access the modules and welcome enquiries from students from any country. The courses are designed and delivered in person by Professor Heather Skirton, an experienced clinical practitioner with an international reputation in the field of health genetics.
