Program Overview

Program Description:

Nottinghamshire, with its castles and stately homes, is one of the best places in the UK to experience the history, heritage and symbolism of the British upper classes - and the people who served them.

This course provides you with an introduction to the English country house socially, artistically and symbolically. It will encourage you to develop a critical understanding of these historic buildings as products of the heritage industry.

On this course, you will explore the origins of the country house by going on several day trips. There are many examples to choose from in the area, including the impressive Chatsworth House (home of the Duke of Devonshire), Hardwick Hall (an outstanding example of Elizabeth architecture) as well as Calke Abbey, Kedleston Hall and Belton House – all grand country houses that inspire their visitors.

Through lectures and group work, you will begin to understand the political, economic and social importance of these buildings. You will learn about the symbolic heritage of the country house and the different values inherent in their presentation today.

You will collect information and visual records, and complete a project that you will present on the final day.

Upon leaving the course, you will be able to evaluate and illustrate the issue of heritage within country houses in England. You will be able to identify, discuss and demonstrate their messages and values with confidence, and have improved your skills in researching and examining sources of evidence.

This course is ideal for anyone who has an interest in British history and its class structure, and those studying humanities subjects related to the heritage and museum industries.

You should have the required English language skills.
