Program Overview

Program Description:

Architectural models are the best way of communicating 3D ideas, because model-making helps you understand and visualise a space. During this first week, you will learn you how to read technical drawings and find solutions to some of the challenges of making an accurate architectural model.

You will learn the fundamental model-making tips and techniques. Drawings and the equipment to build a 1:100 scale model with its own baseboard will be provided by the tutor, which you will then turn from a pile of MDF and plastic into a professional-looking building.

Whilst your model will be technically accurate, you will be encouraged to think creatively about finishing touches.

By the end of the first week, you will be able to apply your new knowledge of model-making, materials and construction processes to a project that integrates architecture, design and spatial concepts. You will understand how to apply colour and texture to enhance a model, use cutting and construction tools (including vacuum forming) safely, and work accurately to scale.

“On this course I can show my crazy ideas. I usually create things conventionally, but here I can open my mind.” Qiwen Chen – Xiamen University, China

On the second part of the course, you will explore the concept of place through drawing; you will be introduced to the idea of drawing as a tool for recording, reflecting and communicating ideas around architecture and the built environment.

You will investigate creative approaches to architectural drawing, and spend time developing your personal style whilst responding to the city around you.

You will be drawing on location and working in the design studio. You will use different materials to record architecture, research how people interact with their environment, improve your skills in hand drawing and use the computer to generate images.

No previous experience is necessary. This course is ideal for anyone interested in architecture as well as interior design and theatre set design. You should have the required English language skills.
