Program Overview

Program Description:
The department offers Master's and doctoral programs in sociology designed to prepare students for academic, research, and applied careers. The programs are structured to provide an intellectually stimulating and academically rigorous, yet supportive, environment that emphasizes developing research skills through course work and close collaboration with faculty. Admissions Requirements: In addition to general Graduate School requirements, applicants are required to provide a writing sample and should be intending to complete the Ph.D. degree in sociology. We routinely accept applications only for the fall semester. The completed application should be received no later than January 10 to ensure full consideration for assistantship support. Applications for spring admission are considered only under special circumstances. Master's Degree Requirements: Applicants should have received/be receiving a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a major in sociology. Other majors are considered, but students may have to make up deficiencies without credit. The M.S. requires a thesis, whereas a Master of Sociology (M.SOC.) requires six semester credit hours of practicum (supervised field placement in an organization or agency) and a research paper. A minor for both degrees is optional. Thirty (30) hours of credit is required to obtain a Master's degree. Doctoral Degree Requirements: The Ph.D. requires a total of 72 credit hours. The degree normally requires a Master's in sociology. Doctoral students take core courses in theory and methods/analysis and select courses in two areas of specialization. Some course work from the Master's may be applied. A minor is optional. Student Financial Support: Teaching and research assistantships are available on a competitive basis.
